I own a Sonata and LOVE IT! Never had a problem, 6 years running and just basic maintenance. Dealer's service is most helpful, reliable and competitive with other mechanics. I always take it to them. 120k miles and still going strong and good looks to boot. Fuel economy on the 6 cyl model is about 18-20 city and 27-30 highway. New models come with stability control and traction control, ABS and a ton of other safety features. Also, they are larger than the previous generations. I suggest buying a Sonata any day. Price and warranty can't be beat!

Both are great cars, but if you plan to have kids you'll probably want the larger Sonata. For about the same price as a new Elantra you can get an 06 4 cylinder Sonata with less then 20K miles. I've been driving an Azera for a year now and absolutely love my Hyundai. For me being a 6 ft guy and with 2 child seats in the back I needed a large car, you may not. The best advice is to buy a 2-3 year old used car as they are the best value by far, but if you go new try not to add every option as that will just inflat the price. A fully loaded Elantra would cost you more then the base model Sonata. All Hyundai's come with ABS, multiple airbags and crumple zones, most of the cars now have Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control too, Hyundai is among the safest brands on the road.

Both are very good cars but depends on whats more important to you. The Sonata is bigger but it will use a little more gas. The Elantra will use less gas but is smaller (but still bigger inside then most cars in it's class). I do think the Sonata is the better value right now and the 4 cyl would be a nice middle ground pick.

Right now, Hyundai is offering 0% for 72 months with a $500 rebate on all 08 Sonata's. For the money, you cant beat the 4cyl Sonata!!!

I say skip them both. Go with the Azera, its virtually a mid-sized Lexus, with a different hood ornament. I mean just check it out here: http://www.forbesautos.com/gallery/2007/hyundai/azera/?partner=yahooa
