slaves then are not what we in the States think of now. This was more in the line of an indentured servant who could work under a "owner" for seven years and gain freedom and a better standing in society. Too bad our ancestors in the south tried to use the Bible to justify their evil slavery but the two were not the same.

According to the Bible, Joseph and his brothers were blessed by God and moved there after Joseph correctly interpreted dreams the Pharaoh kept having. They were rewarded several years later with slavery.
Lesson: Blessings from God can be curses for your prodigy.
Just like the idea of a returning Jesus is very detrimental to society. It causes Christians to expect the worse out of people and the future, instead of working together for the better good.

G-d works in mysterious ways. I suggest you reread the Book of Job -- not Cliffnotes, mind you, not the Wikipedia summary of it, but the real thing. Read it really closely, and think about what it says.
Divinity functions above the confines of human logic and limited interests. Any attempt to rationalize what G-d does using human parameters is, if nothing else, presumptuous.

Just a couple of points: Pharaoh's grandfather was most likely a Pharaoh and the Pyramids were not built by slaves of any type.
The myth goes that Joseph became a trusted adviser (no evidence for that or for Joseph). Then he and his brothers bred prolifically and the Egyptians woke up one day and realized that a segment of their population was not truly Egyptian (strange, after that many years, you'd have thought that they would have integrated) and promptly enslaved them. There is also no evidence of this happening.

Old Testament God is a cruel father. When the Israelites offended him, he would punish them in inhumane ways. However, when they behaved he would reward them. I think today we would take that father to social services.
