Even the most awesome 4x4 will get stuck in the sand. When living in Saudi Arabia I had a Range Rover in which I had to carry grates that would allow me traction in the sand. When I would get stuck I would have to pull these off the top rack and place them in front of the wheels. Sand is diffacult to travel over. AWD is mostly designed for on road conditions such as ice, snow and rain and just all around better road handling. They do not do well off road. Some of the Subaru's are not bad off road but just make sure they have the high clearance. Do not drive on the beach as it is dangerous.

If you're trecking up to Corolla... I'd make sure to be in a real 4 x 4. In fact..I believe there's a sign that says only 4 x 4 beyond this point..

But why don't you call the local police from the area you're going and ask them if you'd be ok with an AWD. I'm sure they would know.. what gets stuck and what doesn't.

If the beach your going to allows motorized vehicles, yes you can, although if your talking about your soccer mom mini-van don't try it. I would only take a true 4X4 vehicle to the beach, meaning one that has locking front and rear differentials. Sand is pretty hard driving on if your not careful one wheel spin can cause you to get stuck.
