Any floppy earred dog of any age can get an ear infection.
Bacteria and fungi (yeast) live in the ear normally.
All that it takes is for an ear is to get some moisture in it say from rain and over growth occurers.
When over growth occurs you need antibiotics.
That is why it is a good idea to clean the floppy earred labs ears every 2 weeks or as recommended by your vet.

Get a quality ear cleaner. Vet Solutions,Malaseb
Do not flush the ears. A dog will learn to hate ear cleanings if you do.
Dampened cotton balls with the solution
Remove debris with cotton balls.
Use dry cotton to dry the ear after cleaning. This is a critical step.
As soon as the ear appears red or irritated stop cleaning.

Keeping the flora of the ear in check is the key to preventing reoccuence.
Remember ear infections are painful. So be gentle when cleaning.

I hope your puppy is feeling well soon.

Ear mites are usually the cause of ear infections in puppies.

Ear mites can create an environment within the ear canal which leads to a secondary fungal infection caused by the build up of bacteria and yeast.

To prevent ear mites recurring in the ear there is a product called "Thornit" which comes in powder form and can be sprinkled under the ear flap. You only need a tiny amount.
I dip the handle of a teaspoon into the powder and just cover the tip of the handle. This is enough to shake into the ear.
The ears will be as clean as a whistle in a few days.

I have used "Thornit" to keep my dogs' ears free from ear mites for years and it really does work.

If you tap "Thornit" into your search engine you will be able to read all about it and find a list of stockists where you can buy it. Most Vets will stock it but you may find you can get it cheaper through Canine Chemists on the net. I pay £7.95 for it in the U.K. which is around $15 I think but it lasts for years as you only use a very small amount each time.

Hope this helps.

If the pup is a long haired breed , fungus will grow from lack of air circulation in the ear , keep the hair clipped in front of the ear . All dogs carry the bacteria and most do not get ear infections . If the puppy is stressed or immune system is low the fungus or infection will take hold . Allergies can also trigger an immune drop . Make sure your pup is on a premium dog food .

Labs are notorious for ear infections. Biggest thing is to keep them clean and ears dry. Use a commercial ear wash (I like the NaturVet one) or even 1:1 apple cider vinegar to water. Use a cotton ball to wipe out the ears once a week with the ear wash. A good quality food with no corn, wheat, and soy would also be beneficial.

Water getting caught in a puppy's ears can cause an infection. Have you given him a bath recently? If so, make sure you put cotton balls in his ears when bathing him so not as much water gets in.

I had a dog that was part lab and we had a devil of a time with ear infections with him. I was told by the vet that flop-eared dogs that live in areas with high humidity often get fungal ear infections. It doesn't take much moisture to get one, just constant moisture. Make sure you get the infection cleared up completely or it will come back.

some breeds are just prone to it, like cockers, bassets, golden retrievers, poodles, etc/ it can be caused from water in the ear. so if they were in water, that may be why. ve also known ear infections to get worse just from the dog scratching it.
