I have been a life long NFL football fan. But with all of the "Spygate" cheating and other atrocities that mar the game, I have begun to broaden my horizons to other sports. So I am curious. How are NASCAR points distributed? What about bonus points? Which driver should I get behind? Whom should I avoid?

Thanks for your help.

I have helped people w/ this before...hope this helps you and congrats on being a future Nascar fan!

Below are 3 ways drivers are paid

1). The "base" payout for the race is in two parts. The racing purse is put up by the track and pays out on a straight declining scale, the winner gets more than second and so on down the line. On top of that is the television money which also paid out on a declining scale.

2).There are a number of different bonus payouts that drivers can be eligible for. For example the driver that leads the most laps wins the Gatorade Front Runner award and a $10,000 bonus regardless of where he finishes. Sometimes there are awards for drivers that lead specific laps, "hard charger" awards for gaining the most positions, headache awards for having bad luck, etc. These will all affect the final prize money.

3) In addition, NASCAR itself has the Winners Circle Program. This is a bonus award program that goes to the previous season's top ten winners, by number of races won plus the first two winners in the current season who aren't already in the program. This bonus helps ensure that the sport's big names go to every race.

NASCAR has an additional bonus paid out to any team currently in the top 30 in points which makes the race.

So depending on how you did last year, where you are in the points this year, which sponsor decals you have on your car and any number of other factors you could earn more or less than any other driver in the race. How you finished that day is only part of the total story.

As for the driver. They have different personalities and driving styles. Maybe there is a local guy who runs NASCAR too. Its easy to find one that you like. Lots of people also have a favorite manufacturer.

I like the Chevy teams. My favorite driver is Stewart because he is one of the few drivers that will say what he is thinking even if its not the most popular thing.

Johnny Benson and Jack Sprague are both from the same area as me too. So on the rare occasion they run I will cheer for them.

Picking a favorite driver is entirely up to you. But please, watch a few races first, get to know the guys, and then decide. Many people jump on the Dale Earnhardt, Jr or Jeff Gordon bandwagon just because they are the only drivers they have ever heard of. Not that these guys aren't good too, but there are many other excellent drivers out there to choose from as well.

you have heard all about the points and that is correct as for what driver/s to get behind, watch a few races and take it from there, we can all scream our faves, but you should choose the driver/team that you really like...

choosing a driver is your choice. my driver is Dale Earnhardt Jr. points are given out for laps run, most laps led, and for winning a race.

Dude, stick with football. I am in no way trying to dis respect fans of Nascar. However I was a fan for over 10 years. Nascar has become nothing more than a soap opera on wheels. It is no longer about the racing. It is all about the trophy wives and pimping whatever product you have to. It seems more and more that races are rigged and it is becoming the equivalent of wwe.Fake and staged.
