We are thinking of getting a short-haired Chihuahua puppy soon!! I can't wait! Only, we can't decide on whether to get a male or female Chihuahua.
For Female
1. Tend to be more loyal to their family and not to strangers
2. A bit smaller and lighter
3. There are more female dog clothes and stuff on the market than boy clothes (although, we do not plan to dress our dog up, but we're getting a short-haired chihuahua, and they are sensitive to cold weather)
For Male
1. Cant become pregnant
2. Are loyal to their family and to strangers a taad bit more than the female
3. Bigger in height (you may wonder why this is an advantage, but with Chihuahuas they are already very small and to get a female, it will be even smaller!!! lol)
people say that males are more agressive in most dog breeds, but in chihuahuas they say that males are calmer. please help me decide!!!

also, if we ever got a female Chihuahua, we would call it Minnie but what would we call a Male Chihuahua? We would like to call it Buddy, but we have a friend who has two labradors and the yellow one is called Buddy. Perhaps a name that means small or a name that is mexican?

all the Chihuahuas I've met and dealt with were big dogs trapped in a little dog"s body. They are very loyal to their owners and have a tendency to pick a favorite human in their household that they will be very protective of. The male Chihuahuas are not as aggressive as males of other breeds, but they are more aggressive than the females. Overall the Chihuahua is a pretty laid back dog.
I prefer male dogs because they tend to be more territorial and will be better alarms and I'm always surprised at who is afraid of dogs, so even a little dog can scare off an intruder.
edit:
as for names: Ramon, Diablo (Devil), Iago. Romeo is a good name, too

All dogs have different personalities. I have a female chihuahua who I have had almost a year. She is very calm and gets along with everyone. I guess you can say she isn't really your average chihuahua. She doesn't bark and loves to meet new people. I think it is all in the way you raise them since they are puppies. The winter is very cold for them, so I have several clothes for her. She even has a cute little jacket. I also have 3 male boston terriers who hate other dogs, but seem to love her.
They are very easy to train, mine learned on puppy pads within a couple days of having her. My male bostons seem to have to pee on EVERYTHING they can see. It's a territorial thing males have. and about the pregnancy thing, you should have her spayed if you don't want to deal with it.
She is so sweet and calm, I honestly couldn't decide at first whether I wanted a male or female, but I am so glad I chose a female. Just take advice from me, give your chi alot of attention in it's puppy days. Let it meet alot of people and become confortable with them, this way they won't be mean leter on in life. If you have any other questions like food issues or anything feel free to email me at mnv_smiley@yahoo.com I will be glad to help. :)

Chihuahuas are adorable and very very loyal. That being said, they are also a nightmare. Of course every dog is different, but Chis tend to be nasty with "outside" people. When you're in with them, you have it made. A stranger? Not so much.
I have a male Chi who has a spitfire personality. We adopted him as an adult and he came rife with problems including food aggression and the desire to bite everyone we came across on the street. It took a lot of love and socialization, plus training with the food aggression, to get him under control. Still, stranger sometimes set him off, though occaisionally he allows them to pet him. I always have to warn people.
The good thing is though, they are TINY, so no one is going to get killed if you get one with a vicious streak. Just be forewarned that this can happen and if you are okay with it then that's great!
If I were you, I'd get a male. Females tend to be even more difficult when it comes to strangers and other dogs.
Also, socialize, socialize, socialize. Have your Chi around people all the time as a pup. Take him to dog parks so he will learn that strange people and dogs are positives. This worked wonders with our adult adopted boy. For a puppy I'm sure it can only work better.
Enjoy your new puppy and good luck!

I can't speak completely specifically to Chihuahuas, but I am much more drawn to male dogs of toy breeds. They seem to be much more eager to please their families and females are a bit more self involved. Since Chihuahuas are very frequently a "one person dog", consider who will be spending the most time with the dog or who will have most responsibility for it. Males tend to bond more with female owners and females tend to bond more with male owners.

Just because males can't get pregnant doesn't mean there aren't benefits to neutering them, including reducing the potential for aggressive behavior and avoiding reproductive health problems later on. If you spay or neuter your dog, it doesn't matter what sex you get (unless you are concerned about dog clothing).

It is hard to say really which is better because every dog has it's own personality, so you really can't group them like that. I would just say, find one that you feel a connection with when you meet it and don't focus so much on sex. And please tell me that you are not thinking of breeding this dog...there are plenty of qualified individuals to do this! Good luck!
