I flew USAir between Philly and London last year, and I have flown Northwest transatlantic many times. In this case--transatlantic--Northwest's product is clearly superior. I was impressed with NW's in flight entertainment--about 40 movies, plus sitcomes, documentaries, lifestyle programs at my seat that I could start, stop, pause and return at any time during the flight. Plus, the meal (in one direction at least) was actually the best I've had on a transatlantic flight in at least 10 years. Wine and beer are complimentary throughout the flight. Seating is 2-4-2 in a big widebody Airbus 330, which is all Northwest use now on their London flights. http://www.seatguru.com will help you find the best seat with them.

Northwest operates flights that arrive to Gatwick. Only US-based airlines American and United can operate flights to Heathrow, but that will change in March 2008 with the Open Skies Agreement.

In my opinion both carriers are about the same. Neither one offers more superior service. Just as the person above me posted, go with the carrier that flies direct and avoid the JFK and Newark corridor since that is the busiest airspace in the world. I would also look at price, how full the flight is and what time the flight departs and arrives.
If you are a member of a frequent flyer club, US Airways is part of the Star Alliance. Members include United Airlines Lufthansa, Air Canada and about 20 other airlines. Northwest is part of the SkyTeam Alliance. Members include Delta, Continental, Air France-KLM and several others. If you have a frequent flyer membership, then see if that airline is a member of either the Star Alliance or SkyTeam.

Unfortunately for you, that's not much of a choice. Frankly, they're both awful.
Since you don't mention where you are flying from, it's hard to suggest a better alternative. I try to avoid both of these airlines, as well as United. I also try to avoid anything that connects through JFK or Newark because the air traffic delays can be incredible.
If one of these two flies nonstop, and there is not an alternative, then I would take the nonstop.
