I am one of the many who spent the extra hard earned $$$$ on a new PS3 right when they came out for a bunch of reasons including but not limited to the internal hard drive which I wanted to store .mp3 and .avi files so that I can watch compressed movies with a couple remote control clicks. Is there a way to playback an .AVI file on a Playstation 3? Is there a way to install a CODEC for playback of an .AVI on the PS3?

No, not at the moment. But Sony is working on DivX codec so we'll see that in the near future. There is a way to install .avi files on the PS3 but you'll have to install Yellow Dog Linux first. But I wouldn't recommend that since there are a lot of problems that might occur.

properly AVI video clips with the DivX codec artwork yet I attempt to shop up as a lot as now with all PS3 gadget replace rumours and expertise and there has been to talks about increasing the video varieties, it would want to be that PS3 won't ever play AVI.

You can encode almost any video into PS3's format if you'll download a program from www.pspvideo9.com
