There IS NO really good answer for having one in your car.

First of all, if you get pulled over for ANY infraction, especially speeding, with a $300 radar detector in the car, you are stupid, because the whole idea behind radar detectors is to warn you BEFORE you get pulled over. Having the detector in your car at that point just emboldens the cop and erases any sympathy he may have had for you because now you intended to break the law. However, you don't need to give an answer to anyone if you are not breaking the law. Since you claim that radar detectors are legal in your state, your answer could be "why do you ask?", because the SOB has no reason to ask. Cops have a bad habit of intimidating motorists because cops have guns. If you were speeding or got pulled over for some other infraction, you are eligible for a ticket for that offense unless the cop finds you doing something else illegal as well. Period. If you really do get pulled over for something other than speeding, and you feel compelled to give him an answer, tell him that it makes you a better, safer, more alert driver, because the purpose of radar is to ensure people are driving the speed limit, and that is exactly what you do when your radar detector goes off. You make sure you are driving at the speed limit. But the primary reason for radar or photo enforcement of any motor vehicle law is revenue, and secondarily for reason safety.

Over here in the UK a senior cop was quoted as saying that it is inappropriate speed that kills, not absolute speed. Over the last ten years Gatso speed cameras have sprung up all over the place. We now have a code of practice that says they must only be placed at more dangerous places and be painted bright yellow. So you might suggest to the officer that the detector is a driver's aid to identifying dangerous areas, as otherwise he's just using the radar trap as a form of raising money!

Nothing you say is going to work. If he sees one in your vehicle, you can usually kiss getting a break goodbye.

Many cops, even though they had every intention of just giving you a warning, will scrap that and write the ticket if they see a fuzz buster in your vehicle. They figure that the detector has gotten you out of several already. This is generally true no matter why you were stopped in the first place.

I'm sure they don't all do it. But based on what I've heard, I don't think your chances of getting off the hook would be too good.

Yes. Have you ever seen those radar guns that the cops just park and leave, and they display the speed? Those are the same thing...facing traffic. Also, I was pulled over by a cop facing me. Let off with a warning. I think there is an adjustment that is set for which direction the officer is facing for the radar gun, because it seems they can face either direction. That's my guess. The gun would have to compensate for direction of travel obviously.

You can say that you very concerned about the Road safety in your state, you think the police should have more radar checks.

So you are drinving around spotting the radar checks so you get an idea if enough is been done.

My son is a police officer and if he or his fellow police pull you over and you have a radar detector, you won't get a break
and will get a ticket. Police officers can't stand them and know they don't work and you're dumb to try to use one.

It isn't a radar detector. It is an alien detector. I put it in the last time when I was abducted.

Your Dad needed to use your car and forgot to take it out, you weren't using it, really, or the cop wouldn't have pulled you over.

The best, far and away, are the ones with the sensors mounted under the hood and a discrete control panel on the dash. Then the cop never sees it.

Drive safe.
