If they have not come down by now, it is unlikely they will.
Yes, you need to have the surgery done. Testicular cancer in cryptorchid dogs (those with undescended testicles) is incredibly high. This is one of the reasons why retained testicles is the ONLY AKC disqualifying fault that covers ALL breeds.. its just that dangerous.
Please notify your dog's breeder. Retained testicles are genetic... your breeder will want to know so she can make any necessary adjustments to her breeding plans.

You could try waiting, but usually by 6 months if they haven't decended they aren't going to.
I'm suprised that when you took him in to get neutered, they didn't just do the surgery while he was still there.
It is a slightly more invasive surgery than just a regular neuter, but it isn't any more invasive than a spay for female dogs would be. They make an incision in the lower abdomen and then retrieve the testicles that way.
I probably wouldn't wait. I would definately get it done before he's 1 year old. They recover very quickly. They usually bounce back within a day or two. And it reduces the risk of him wanting to lift his leg and pee on everything in the house.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

They spay females and neuter males. The testicles MUST be removed or your dog could face serious problems later on, even cancer. It is time to remove them now. If they have not descended by five months chances are slim to none that they will ever descend. Follow the vet's advice.

Go ahead and get him Neutered. You should always ask a vet any questions you have before you leave that office. You are paying for his knowledge, we are good personal opinions and sharing our experiences only. My opinion is condescended testicles could cause health issues for your pet in the foreseeable future, and the younger your little guy gets neutered the better for him.

NO! My male Sibe is AKC, and I had planned on competing with him, unfortunately, he had one inverted testicle. Finally, when he was 13 months old, Iafter an ultrasound, among many other $$$ things, I had to have him neutered. You cannot breed a dog with this issue anyway, so get him neuteres. In additon, it can cause health complications if not corrected. If it hasn't dropped by now, it won't.

There is still a possibility that they will descend, so I would wait at least a couple of months. It won't do any harm and your boy will be that much older & stronger to cope with what is major surgery. If they don't come down, then you must have him castrated as there is a strong possibility that the testicles will become cancerous.

You mean neutered??? They need to be removed. Even at this stage, there is little chance that they will descend. It is an easier procedure on him to do it while he is younger. Do it now. Too bad you didn't get him from a good breeder that would have known that he had undescended testicles.

If you have him done now it will require internal surgery, if you wait it will be less invasive. That's why he told you to wait. They should drop shortly, so I would wait.
