Oh...what an open ended question.

First off...poo on you people who trash the east. Personally I'm sick of all the "western snobs". Anyone can ski in big bowls with no trees and no ice. Skiing in the east takes freakin' talent. We may not have big long runs, but we don't get altitude sickness either. Don't get me wrong, I like the west too, but for most denizens of the megalopolis, the east is the viable alternative to taking a week off in order to fly to Denver or Salt Lake.

OK...that's out of my system.

The "Best" is a matter of great opinion depending what you are looking for.

In my humble opinion the most challenging terrain will be found at Jay Peak or Mad River Glen. You can get long runs at those places too, but it means waiting for the Jay Tram or the Single Chair at Mad River. Killington will give you long runs ONLY if you want to ski a lot of green dot slopes.

If you want a party, Killington is usually a good place to look on weekends. Stowe and Stratton are also good for Apres' Ski. Mount Snow is OK. I think all of these have a wide variety of terrain, however, I've always found myself ducking the ropes mid-week to get to the good stuff. Patrol loves to close trails at all of them, especially mid-week due to lifts not being used or to preserve the trails for the weekend...a bogus excuse.

Okemo and Bromley have the best ski schools. I've worked with the ski school folks at both places. Both are top notch schools with good instructors. Pico is also good. I think Bromley and Pico have harder terrain, but Okemo has a nice layout.

On to New York....Whiteface, Windham, Gore, and Hunter are the four I'm most familiar with. I like Gore the best due to it's layout and terrain options. I also like Hunter, but NEVER ski at Hunter on a weekend. Gore is the only one of these I could ski more than two days in a row and not get bored.

The Poconos....Elk is the best. I grew up skiing the Poconos, moved to VT, and now am back in the Poconos. Elk is the only place I don't get bored. Blue Mountain and Jack Frost are good too, but pale compared to Elk. I avoid Shawnee and Camelback at all costs. Camelback is usually boilerplate hardpack and Shawnee is mostly filled up with city-slickers who are goofing off and skiing like jackasses because they are too cheap to take lessons. They ski in jeans, Perry Ellis hoodies and leather jackets and then wonder why they are cold.

I've also left out three places on purpose. They are in the N'east...but I'm not saying where because I'm not giving up my stashes. Ed Abbey would agree.

The choices have to be either Killington or Sugarloaf. There are other good ones, but any discussion about the best has to come down to those two.

Stowe is a nice town, but I feel there is better skiing in other places. All depends on if you are about the skiing or the Apres Ski.

Unfortunately there aren't any really good ones if you are an experienced skiier and the past couple of years has seen very little snow/cold weather in areas that are OK for beginners. I've went to the Poconos (near Philidelphia) my first time skiing and had fun, but it's still small with substandard snow compared to the much better resorts out west.
