We have a 20+ year old house and want to do some updates. Several of the walls have wallpaper on them. With the exeception of one room that has grass paper (I know I have to remove that), I'd like to know if I can scrape off the areas that are lifting up (so there's no bubbles or gaps) and then paint over it instead of removing it. Has anyone ever done that with a lot of success... or with a complete flop? Any pro painters out there that have done this a lot? Or is it absolutely the wrong thing to do. I really need to figure this out so if you have direct experience, please let me know what happened.
Thanks!

I just redid my entire downstairs that was wallpapered. If the wallpaper is in excellent condition with no peeling, bubbles, or lifted seams then you can prime and paint and it will look great. If not, forget it....don't paint over it....it will be a pain in the butt and look horrible. Since you said you have to scrape some areas, take it all down...it's soooo much easier and looks nicer. Use DIF to remove the paper. Be careful when you score the wallpaper not to press too hard or you will have little holes in the walls.

Good Luck.

We did it at my parent's house because they had some really nice paper with a raised pattern that they really didn't want to remove. It worked pretty well - just a "bubble" here or there. The real trick is to use a good paint and be ready to paint quickly. The more you "work it" - the more likely it is to start lifting. If you do decide to go that route - be aware that it will look really awful with lots of bubbles at first. It will shrink back down as the paint dries. Of course your best bet would be to remove the wallpaper - but if you want to try this, my suggestion would be to do a small section and let it dry. Then if you don't like the result, you can always pull off the wallpaper and start over without wasting a lot of time and paint. Good luck!

I have many times had to do this when wallpaper bled into wall and could not be removed. Unfortunately I haven't had perfect results. If you don't mind seeing the seams of the paper then it does fairly well. If you are a perfectionist, then I would suggest re-papering. I have found that textured paints can give a little better results. Good Luck!

My wife and I moved in to our house and it was the same situation. We did learn to primer the wall paper before painting. We went to the local store and bought the brush with two rollers on one stem and used two different colors on the room that the wall paper was peeling pretty bad. You cant even tell and in the other room we just primered and painted . It turned out really good. I think you will be fine! Good Luck

I wouldnt advise it, you will probably have to remove the wallpaper and skim the wall with drywall compound. and repaint... an easy way to remove the wallpaper, is to continually soak the walpaper with vinegar in a spray bottle and scrape it off..... I had to do this to my entire house 1 room at a ltime.

i totally wouldn't advise it...your better off if you just peel all the wallpaper off so you don't have the risk of having any lines or bubbles. it takes a little more time but i think you'll like the finished product better.

No, you can not if you want good results. You need to rent a wallpaper steamer and that will help immensely.
