Why do Canadians eat certain foods? Why do residents of the United States eat certain foods? (Although most of what is in the Standard American Diet I would not consider food and do not consume.) Why do Mexicans eat certain foods? Asutrailians? People in England? Germans? French? For that matter, traditional foods in the Southern US vary from traditional foods in the Northeast part of the country, or even the Southwest. Despite being states, Hawaii and Alaska are very different in culture than the Continuous 48. My husband and I both grew up in the Midwest. He has spent all but three years of his 30 in Ohio and I was born in Southeast Texas, lived in a Columbus, OH suburb for a few years and then 14 years of my life in Southern IN. We have spent three of the past four years in Columbus while my husband attended grad school. (Last year from August to August of this year we were in Michigan so he could do his internship.) My parents are from Western NY and Cleveland; His parents live in the same town they've lived in their whole lives. My husband and I still have different ideas of what to eat and when, what is food, etc. Even things like Thanksgiving and Christmas come with different foods from our families.

Essentially, it just boils down to culture and tradition.
