I'm a computer service tech. I run 3 machines. A desk top and a laptop with Vista Home Premium, and a second desk top with XP. Any more, I only use the XP machine for a little research in answering question on this and other forums. But here's my opinion on Vista.

I find it to be about twice as fast as XP. Now when I say fast I mean that it opens programs and windows much faster then does XP. It is stable and secure. It does require a bit of setting up (tweaking), but so does XP. It handles it's file structure much better then XP.

It does have a bit of a learning curve, but all new operating systems have that.

I do not understand all of the negative comments about Vista. I bought it and loaded it when it first came out and have had no problems since. Yes there were a couple of really old programs that would not run on this new system, but they were very old and didn't work all that well on XP. I have noticed that more of the older software is working now that a few patches have been issued. As far as hardware is concerned, all of mine works with Vista. I have heard of a few older printers that are having driver problems, but that's about all.

Outside of Linux, Vista is going to be the operating system of the future so we might as well learn it now and be a step ahead of the masses.

Vista is a bit of a resource hog. Home Basic likes to run on at least a gig, and Primium wants 2 gigs. If I were to run Ultimate I would probably install a couple more gigs. Memory is not expensive. I have noticed that Vista does run slow if there isn't enough ram installed.

One more thing. Vista set up and handles my home network better then XP ever did.

Well that's about it. If you want more info, check out some of the web sites and blogs were Vista is being discussed.

My opinion of Vista is that it sucks! I format and load XP on every computer I finds that has it. No one that I know of likes it

Everybody is constantly complaining here about problems with Vista and saying how slow it is and how much they hate it. If you haven't opened the box yet, return it to the store!

Your best bet would be to leave it alone. Just adhere to the instructions a windows xp user would.

In all reality, the 2 aren't that different, but oh well.
