As long as theyre not over tired during the day theyre fine. You already said the older goes down at 9, and gets up fine in the am, that IS a schedule.
yes children need a certain amount of time, but generally they will get it when its available to them. So long as theyre not over tired they'll sleep enough. Its when theyre over tired that you have to step in and set up a schedule.

Well since they are in bed at 9:00 I will say no that your not harming them. 9:00 is a reasonable time for a kid, my 8 year old goes to bed at 9:00 on school nights but I don't set a bedtime on the weekends. However my 5 month old goes to bed around 7:30- 8:00 every night. I think the younger they are the more sleep they need

My son is 5 years old, the lastest he goes to bed is 7:30-8pm. He gets up around 7am sometimes earlier. The other day he slept 13 hours straight. Only because he wasn't feeling well. Most nights my son gets up to 10 hours of sleep. Sometimes they go through growth spurts. Just be consistant with their bed times. Ok 9 for the 8 year old as you stated and I would say 7:30 for the 3 year old. I think 9 pm is a little late for the 8 year old in my opinion.
My friend's child is almost 8 and he goes to bed by 7:30...he has half an hour to stay in his room quietly to read or play in his room only. 8pm is definately lights out and he sleeps until 7:30. So in between 10-12 hours is what they need.

My 8 year old needs a minimum of 10 hours to be good all day long. That's her needs. If your kid needs 9, or 11, or whatever, that's fine. The important thing is that the child gets up each morning just fine, without being tired. That to me means he/she's getting enough sleep.
Sleep schedules are beneficial for us all - try to remember pulling a graveyard shift somewhere you worked, and how hard that was on your body. But that doesn't mean you have to go to bed at exactly the same time every day of your life. It's just not possible.

I think your kids do need a set time. kids require at least 8-9 hours of sleep. I have a set bedtime for my kids and it works great. I put them to bed at 8pm and they wake up every morning between 6 and 7. You should at least have a set bedtime for the 3 year old. since your other one is older maybe you can put the 8 year old to bed an hour later.

She wasn't trying to make you feel like a bad mom silly ...she was sharing woman to woman. My children were put on sleep schedules and they took over later. That made it quite a bit easier when the invincible thinking years came along such as older elementary school years. Yes, this subject surfaces again did you forget? We all need our sleep don't we? You betcha so no bribery ...it's a graduation thing. They graduated every year by my giving them a half an hour per year to give to themselves as they moved thru their grades starting with the time I set to begin with which they were already use to.

I don't think kids need an exact sleep pattern... but i do think that they need a certain amount of sleep....not for their organs, but so they can wake up, be rested, be in a good mood and have the right frame of mind.
it's so important when you're a kid to get enough sleep cause you learn so much when you're that age and if you're tired all the time you can't focus on taking things in.
i wouldn't say you're a bad mom... i don't know you and if you're goes to sleep on her own at 9, well that's her own routine already.
kids aren't like adults. when they're truely exhausted.... they'll sleep!
good luck! :)

Everyone needs the right amount of sleep. Really, it depends on the individual, but generally children need 10 or 11 hours. As long as they have at least that, then you don't NEED a strict routine. Routines do help, but I know it's difficult for busy mothers to be able to set one.

Yes .. children need a certain amount of uninterrupted sleep at night.. and that has to be more then the amount that their parents need :)
Don't think too much into it. If they don't act sleep deprived, and are developing / meeting their milestones fine, then they are getting enough sleep.

You're not harming them. Just as long as they get enough sleep. I think 8-10 hours is good or you could ask the kid's doctor.
