The movie is indeed based on an actual event. I think this link:

is a little more relavent.
The movie was alright, though it was completely silly- it's just for kicks.
The actual case was absurd. A girl DIED because of negligence. She became obscenely underweight [I forgot how much she weighed but I think it was less than 80 lbs which is COMPLETELY unhealthy for a woman her age]. What that girl needed was to get to a hospital. She was going insane and everyone around her assumed that she was just possesed because everyone who was giving their opinions were highly religious. She saw demonic faces because she, too, was highly religious and you're most likely going to see what scares you most and what drives you the most insane. It could've just as easily been spiders she was seeing everywhere. Even the Catholic church would not 'exorcise' her because they didn't think she was possesed.

Another attempt to turn the tragic tale of a deranged woman's death into some sort of 'lesson'.

The actual case on which this film is based was a considerably more obvious criminal act by a few deluded fundamentalists.
