Today they do not. But the question the American people should be asking is, "Is it time to either ask Japan to start footing the bill for their protection or to require them to start protecting themself?" They have a large enough economy and have enough technology to protect themself. I think the US economy would see a boom of historic proportions if we would stop policing the world and bring the majority of our troops home.

EDIT: Excuse me to the guy below me. But didn't Japan conquer China only 50 years ago? Doesn't Japan have nearly as strong an economy as China? Shouldn't the Japanese fit the bill for their own defense if they can't protect themself against China? Why should my hard-earned tax dollars go to protecting foreign nations that have as strong an economy as the US? Naive....how about realistic?

If the US would be unfold skinny then i'd like to work out the Russians in the form of the conflict. the US has a million.5 million lively troops to Russia's a million million besides to a further a million.5 million reservists to Russia's 800,000. the US has 11 airplane carriers to Russia's a million and has over one hundred escort vessels to Russia's 25. meanwhile the US Airforce has 5,500 airplane to Russia's 4000. the US exceeds Russia not purely numerically yet in addition technologically, logistically, in conflict practise and intelligence amassing. because of the fact the tip of the chilly conflict the Russia militia has very just about controlled to maintain muddling via having to deal with drastic funds cuts. Russia is at the instant recent technique a streamlining technique to create a well-known and useful yet smaller rigidity. So Russia is neither at the instant nor foreseeable a considerable threat to the US. Likewise this way of conflict would be quite not likely to ensue by way of the two aspects having important nuclear purposes.

The answer is 'YES' but they wouldn't have to. The Japanese Naval, Air and Ground Self Defense Forces are small but very well trained and equipped and would have US support no matter what. Any aggressor in the region would find Japan impregnable.

Not at this time.mainly because in the surrender said that Japan would not maintain a military
force of threaten size. But lately Bush has renewed
the standing that we will support Japan in any
action as long as Japan doesn't declare war.
The US government agreed to let Japan have newer
fighters, and help in there space program

It might have but I think the Japanese are not allowed to be a military power without supervision, one of the penalties they suffer for their crimes in WW2.

nope, neither the manpower or the training. it's actually written in their constitution that all they can have is a self-defense force and not a very big one at that.
