I am fostering a 5 year old canine Peek who was fixed 1 wk ago. She has been in pain the entire time and isn't acting normal-this one usually follows you everywhere. She holds her back arched and scuttles around like something invisible is poking her. 4 tiny gauge stainless steel sutures (tied like twisty ties) were cut to 1/4". They are pricky, painful to touch, and leave itchy red dots on skin. She can't reach the incision to lick or scratch, but tries and now has a rash 1 inch from both sides of the incision-using her back leg. I put antibiotic salves on to keep infection away-I hope. When she finds a "comfortable" hiding place she sleeps all day and won't move. She'll eat & drink, if you bring it to her, but won't go out of her way. She will go outside, and even run, but you can see the twitches of pain. Both vet and group leader say it shouldn't be a prob, and although I don't see infection, the area under the skin is getting thicker. Does this seem normal to you? Help please :(

I am very concerned about the spreading 'rash".... it sounds like an infection.

Call your vet, explain her posturing, and tell him about the reddened area that is spreading away from the incision site. Ask him to humor you and let you bring your Peek into the office for a quick check. Be polite, but persistant and see the vet today!

Perhaps they can put something on the end of the sutures so they do not irritate.

Good luck!

The skin is scaring and is pulling on the rest of the skin. This is not normal however it happens from time to time. If she will let you try and rub the area. This will help to reduce the scaring tissue. If the problem persists talk to your vet about a pain killer. You can also try, if the tissue is healed, Neosporin. This will help with the scaring as well.
Hope this helps.
