there are chimps who sign...they may not be very complicated in their speech...so they might say "he's just imitating"
but would you call a mentally retarded mute, a monkey? after all, his behavior would be the same...

Not really as is is fairly apparent that some species are "close" to us. Chimps use tools and have their own dialects.
"Macro Evolution" is a creationist term based on their poor understanding on how evolution works.
