I say bye then hang up. My husband used to drive our children and myself nuts because he NEVER says bye! He says when he's done he's done and everyone knows so why say bye??? It's now a joke in our house.

Nozi, in American culture, and other English-speaking cultures, the structure of the conversation is very important. We have complex "saying goodbye" rituals that we do so that everyone can know that the conversation is over. Have you ever noticed how people may say goodbye two or three times before they actually hang up the phone? This is part of that complex ritual. I've even had experiences where the phone conversation got cut off because a phone battery died or the call was dropped and one caller called back just to say goodbye! That's how important it is to us. I can see why your friends, who are expecting this ritual, are surprised when you hang up without doing it. It might seem pointless but the things you say are actually informing the other person that you don't wish to bring up any new topics and you both give your permission for the conversation to close. In addition, "hanging up on someone" is what people will do if they are mad at that person.
This is not done the same way in all cultures. My understanding is that in Russia, people do simply hang up the phone when they are done with the conversation.
If you continue to hang up without doing the closing of the conversation, people might think you are rude. Feel free to e-mail me with more questions.

Nozi,
You are not rude, you are just taking the freedom to do what you feel with your friends when you just hang up. But it is better to say bye or something like talk to you later or some warm way of closing the call. Ultimately in a relation, however we interact with each other, what we all look for is a good feeling, that the other person cares for us. Ending calls with a bye or some such courtesy statement is a nice habit to have in place.
wishes..
