And also I was just wondering...do companies do background checks before or after the interview?

Background checks are done after they have decided to hire you. Basically you will get a job offer contingent on the results of the background check and/or drug tests.

Here are some of the excuses that I have used in the past:

1) The *telephone* company needs to make a repair, and I have to be home so they can check the lines inside my house.
*You can also replace telephone with electric, cable, plumbing, etc.

2) I have a court date for my speeding ticket.
*This one can also be dragged out. (i.e. The prosecuting attorney wasn't ready, my lawyer pushed for another court date, etc. in order to clear time for a possible second interview)

3) Morning interview - Call in late with flat tire and work late to make up the time.

4) Evening interview - Early dinner/theater reservations with spouse/significant other for an event such as a fake anniversary.

Well since it is such short notice, I would just take a sick day.
Obviously they are seeing you today so maybe that would be a little suspicious.

I usually go with a doctors/dentist appointment.. but I successfully used the excuse that my neighbors kid was off school with chicken pox and her mum hadn't had it yet so I was watching her.

Another short notice excuse is if you have a pet, say they got into something outside and ate something that's making them vomit so you need the morning to take them to the vet.

Also, the companies usually do the background check after the first interview. They cost them money so they don't want to do them on every applicant, just the potential hires.

They do background checks after the interview. And you could call work and tell them something along the lines of your mom fell down the stairs and you have to go the hospital to make sure shes okay. Then when you go back into work and they ask how your mom is you can say shes perfectly fine. Its an easy way to get out of anything.

Try: Accompany your family members to a lawyer's appointment - no need to disclose the issue due to personal reason.....
Usually companies do background checks after the interview if they are considering to offer you the job or a 2nd interview.

They will do a check after the interview so your present employer will find out anyway. Best to tell the truth. It's possible your present employer will respect you more for this on seeing you have the initiative to improve yourself. Be confident and good luck with the interview.

I would always recommend taking annual leave rather than lying, lying is a slippery slope, so should always be avoided.

Just say your tired and would like to take the day off to chill!

As for background checks, some companies do, others have to (such as legal checks).. depends on the industry and the employer..

You could say it's a doctor's appointment or take the whole day off as sick with a cold. A more honest way to do it would be to take a 1/2 day's holiday - then you won't have to worry about being found out. References are usually only requested when a job offer is made.

Background checks are usually after the interview, if they liked you. Call in sick the day of the interview, any other excuse they give you grief for.

Some do, and you could ask that they not do so unless they are willing to make a conditional offer.

Just tell your office that you need to take personal time off. If they ask why, you could say something to the effect of, "Do you want me to tell you a story about bleeding openings and wounds with pus drooling out? I'd like to take some personal time off without having to explain why."

Note that you haven't said that this is about you or anything else, you simply asked if they want to hear a nauseating story. So you haven't lied to them, either.
