I am currently in the market for a new sevice pistol. I am torn between these two guns however. I know the overall craftsmanship of an HK is supirior to the XD, but wanted to know about preformance.
I am a diehard 1911 fan. When it comes to a combat pistol nothing can come close as far as I am concerned. But due to new management in my academy we are no longer allowed to use single actions that must be ****** and locked.
I want a gun that I can shoot at 25 yards and is extremely reliable. I really dont care for Glocks as I owned a G22 and though it was very reliable the accuracy left much to be desired.
I have fired both an Hk and an XD. As far as comfort they are both very egronomically correct. However, I have not tried and tested over time, so I need some opinions and facts. thanx.

Rather than deal with amateur opinions, I have found that the professionals, both commercial and independent, have given a slight edge to the H-K pistols, from tests run by evaluators from such sources as Guns & Ammo, American Handgunner, and Gun Tests magazines.
In such tests, the H-K USP models had fewer malfunctions and NO (0) failures when tested against, not only the Sig-Sauer, but Beretta, Springfield, and S&W models, as well.
I've run nearly 5,000 rounds through my H-K USP .45ACP, including Hydra-Shok, Cor-Bon, and several equivilent custom handloads, with 0 stoppages EVER, and it's tolerances haven't measureably changed since I first aquired it.
As a 'die-hard' 1911 fan, know too that I carry my USP .45 in 'Condition One' (****** & locked) with a round chambered, just as safely as one can with the 1911.
The only negative factors I've dealt with carrying the USP, inherrent in the SOCOM, as well, is it's larger size, but I'm a larger guy and LIKE the more impressive size, and the limited availability of carry systems, but I carry concealed in my own unorthodox manner, anyway.

P.S: for others that may snivel at the higher prices of the USP's, I recently saw one on Gunbroker for $400, believe it or not, & there have been several .45's & .40's for little more than the XD's asking price.

I have no experience with the HK, so I will only comment on the XD. I own and carry an XD-.40, 5" version. My XD has been incredible since I bought it used and has never had any FTF or FTE issues with any ammo. There were some legitimate complaints with the older versions (like mine) about rust, but Springfield has changed the coating material now to alleviate the problem. The XD feels great in your hands, and shoots well. The trigger pull is a bit heavy (around 6 lbs), but is manageable, especially for a duty weapon. The recoil is average for a semi-auto. You did mention, however, that you were a bit nervous about Glock's trigger safety. The XD also implements a trigger safety, along with a grip safety, so that is something to consider. I fully suggest the Springfield XD, but that suggestion comes with only technical knowledge of the USP, so it is somewhat biased. Good luck with your decision.

I am an XD fan. I own the .45 Tactical and love it. I will tell you I have never shot the HK though. I just really like the XD series. It is less expensive, very smooth shooting, very easy to field strip and I like the feel over the HK better. Both guns are reliable, well made, and will not let you down as from what I hear from range buddies that own USPs.
Because you like the 1911 (c0cked and locked feature) you may prefer the XD....Good luck....

An XD (Croatian made!) is a better deal if you don't mind the trigger design and you can adapt to it. XD pistols in 40SW and 45ACP are even more accurate than what is required out of a service pistol (HK is accurate -but the price!). I do not favor either, but I will not be the buyer-you will.
