I know there is a device you can use from a cassette player that is fairly inexpensive, but unfortunately I drive a Prius and I do not have a cassette player. Is there a device similar to the cassette that will play my I-pod through the car speakers? I am trying to spend a little amount of money, $50 at the most.

I have a gadget that plugs into my i river and also my cigarette lighter and it broadcasts an FM signal that I can play through my car radio. That would come in under $50 - try radio shack or similar.
