The Rabbit was a precusor model to the Golf. It was quite popular, but then VW released the Golf which redefined the model.

In 2005 VM revived the Rabbit name by reapplying it to the Golf model. You will now see on the US site there is no Golf after 2004.

The Mk I Golf (1974-1983) was called a Rabbit for the north American market.
The Mk II (1983-1992), Mk III (1992-1997) and Mk IV (1997-2004) were all called Golf in both Europe and north America.
The Mk V Golf has been re-badged as a Rabbit for the north American market, to try to capture some nostalgia from the Mk I (those badged Golf were never particularly successful in north America, mainly due to hatchbacks being unpopular).
