Yes it is one of the side effects of taking TAMOXIFEN.

Tamoxifen is a synthetic compound similar to estrogen. It mimics the action of estrogen on the bones and uterus, but blocks the effects of estrogen on breast tissue. Tamoxifen is used as adjuvant hormonal therapy immediately after surgery in early stages of breast cancer and in advanced metastatic breast cancer (stages III and above) in women. Some of the side effects of this drug is - weight gain and patients using tamoxifen for long periods of adjuvant therapy may face unwanted effects years into therapy, which warrant discontinued use of the drug. Some of these effects include possible increased risk of developing liver adenoma as well as increased risk of uterine (endometrial) cancer. For this reason only your tummy has increased.

Since you say you are taking Tamoxifen for the past two years I feel you can consult your Oncologist and discontinue the same and also tell him your problem and take his advice. Best of luck-

Ive been on tamoxifen for the past 7 months I also have gained weight. Don't have skinny arms or legs most of the weight has been gained in the middle and the hip area. Asked my oncologist and he said that tamoxifen will cause the weight gain. There's not much that we can do unless we stop taking the meds. My oncologist just laughed and said maybe he could put me on a diet. I didn't think that was too funny.

I hope that you are doing well otherwise with your current management. There is no evidence from the data sheet that tamoxifen actually causes weight gain. It can sometimes produce water retention. Occasionally weight may be gained as a consequence of a eating more either due to a increased appetite or mild nausea - "to settle the stomach"

You should be discussing this problem with your Oncologist whom you should be seeing at least once a year for a check up on your cancer.
