Don't tell him that you love him unless you really do. Just say That you care a lot for him too, and that you hope that the two of you will always be friends.

If you dont know what to say, it probably means you dont love him.
Tell him gently that you no longer feel the same

if you do not want to be with your ex tell him he will have a place in your heart always but you do not feel the same way. it's best to be honest but not brutal!

Think about "why" he is your ex.... that may be your answer.
