Yes, of course it is normal - some cats are just like that. Just make sure you have a good supply of the various things he likes, put them out in his dish and leave him to eat when he pleases. Cats do not starve themselves - he will be getting what he feels his body requires. It's better to have a picky eater than a fat cat.
I leave dry food out all the time for my cats and they just help them selves a little at a time, and they are very healthy.

You used a misnomer in the question. You stated "My cat". It has been said you don't own cats, they just bless you with their presence. They can be very finicky about their food and actions. Sassy will come running up to you when you drive up and get out, but will not allow you to stroke her back about half the time. When walking, she will stay one step ahead and totally ignore you if you call her. If you stop and squat down she may turn and come so you can pet her. Depends on her mood. Other times you cannot get her to leave you alone and is constantly underfoot. So, Yes.

My cat is the same way! He is about 10yrs old and very fat. So most of the time he just lays around and sleeps, but every once in a while he just starts attacking out of nowhere. He also is allergic to some cat food with red coloring in it. He loves treats, but he makes me hand feed him! He is so spoiled and I love him for his weirdness!
