That the Catholic church killed Galileo? And that his sentence to house arrest had to do with theories that the earth isn't flat?
I just read that in an answer...are there really people who believe that? And if you're one of those people, where did you read/hear that?
Just curious. Not trying to be disrespectful.

A Wiki article I read on the subject said that he was imprisoned after poking fun at the Jesuits, and that although one pope did not approve of Galileo's theories, his successor DID.

Don't even get me started on Columbus. He was looking for a passage to India that didn't involve going around the southern tip of Africa, which was and IS highly dangerous. It had nothing to do with whether the earth was considered to be flat or not.
What ARE they teaching in school these days?

The church's house arrest at a fairly old age harmed his health , probably accelerating his demise .
The problem wasn't with the belief that the earth was round . It had to do with the earth not being the physical center of the universe .
He was persecuted more so for publishing his observations about the sun , the moon , and the planets against the command of the pope . The church possibly knew most of what he said was correct . But they did not want to let the people have that information until the church could put a proper spin on it . And they wanted to make an example of him as a disobedient Catholic .
If you Google PBS Galileo you should come up with the link to their excellent show about the church and it reaction to scientific discovery .

His theory was that the Earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around, which challenged the established belief that the Earth was the centre of the Universe.
I don't think it has much to do with the earth being flat - I think that was Columbus, but I may be wrong...I'm not that up on my European history.
I found this on Wiki:
"Galileo was required to recant his heliocentric ideas; the idea that the Sun is stationary was condemned as "formally heretical." However, while there is no doubt that Pope Urban VIII and the vast majority of Church officials did not believe in heliocentrism, heliocentrism was never formally or officially condemned by the Catholic Church, except insofar as it held (for instance, in the formal condemnation of Galileo) that "The proposition that the sun is in the center of the world and immovable from its place is absurd, philosophically false, and formally heretical; because it is expressly contrary to Holy Scriptures", and the converse as to the Sun's not revolving around the Earth.
He was ordered imprisoned; the sentence was later commuted to house arrest.
His offending Dialogue was banned; and in an action not announced at the trial, publication of any of his works was forbidden, including any he might write in the future."

It could be possible....you should never rule anything out, especially when it deals with the most powerful organization of all history. The Catholic Church basically ruled the world for a few hundred years, and even today the church still has tons of influence in the world.
5 out of 9 of the Supreme Court Justices are Roman Catholic...

I believe the church put him under house arrest because there are written records that show that Galileo was imprisoned. Plus, I saw it on the history channel a couple of times.
Also, he was imprisoned because of his theory of a heliocentric solar system. The Catholic Church believed the universe was geocentric at the time.

I saw a guy say that the other day. I laughed my butt off and then waited for the corrections to pour in. But guess what? He got about 20 answers from folks who agreed with him. My God, what are they teaching kids these days?
