I'm 5'8" 140 lbs and I want to get a tattoo on my lower front torso. The lowest point of each will start about an inch in from the part of the hip bone that protrudes a little. The tattoos are each 5 in. tall and 2 in. wide. About how badly should it hurt?

It's probably going to hurt quite a bit. People say, "If it feels good to be kissed there, it'll hurt getting tattooed." This is roughly true for most people - it's sort of a measure of your nerve sensitivity. I have a tattoo on my lower belly near my hip bone and it was pretty tender. Be prepared to wear clothing without waistbands or seams that put pressure on that area for a week or so afterwards.

I strongly recommend a topical lidocaine gel called Topicaine. Apply it generously to the area getting tattooed about 40 minutes before the artists starts. He/she will wipe it off before starting with the needle, but that's OK. During breaks (like between outline and shading, shading and color), reapply the gel with a sterile instrument (like one of those tongue depressers artists use for Vaseline), leave it on for 5-10 minutes before starting up again. It helps LOADS to manage the pain. For me, it makes the difference between crying pain and mild discomfort on those longer sessions.

Not too bad. I have one on my hip and it wasn't bad at all. It just may get irritated easily if yourpants rub on it.
