500 - 900? Right, The kit on the GT isn't bad, howevr, the frames are a little heavy. I do not like Kona. Overall, I do not like the weight/geometry. Scott tend to be viable, but I found the Voltage quite heavy. Also, you are not getting great gears for the money.
Here is what I would look at for the 500 - 900 mark.
Giant XTC (Buy an 06 model)
Scott Scale - Note: this is a good race machine, but if you don't want to race...
Claude Butler - Cape Wrath. Same cost as the Avalanch 1.0, but for 800 - 900, you get Carbon Fibre.
Cannondale. Nice machines, with unique suspension. However, you can get viable models with conventional forks.
Trek - Tend to do some nice models in this range, but are a bit sit up and beg for my liking.
Specialized. Would recommend anything from this manufacturer. You can even get a decent full susser for about 900 - 1000.
Cube - Good Euro manufacturer. Starting to hear good things about their bikes, so I would consider one of their entry level machines.
Marrida - Good frames. You can get a viable machine for about 350.
Overall, for this price range, I would look at a hardtail. Disc brakes are great, although I would not rule out Vbrakes. However, discs are well worth the trouble. Look at a good set, like hope minis though.
For your forks, you should be able to get something with lockout and about 100mm of travel. The nearer the 1000 mark, the better the forks you should look for. Also, look for a decent frame. Everything else can be upgraded.

the GT and the Scott are XC bikes, the kona is dirt jumping, 4X and urban riding so if you just want to ride and go off road sometimes so the GT is best for you but if you want to jump so kona

I've got a Trek Fuel that I'd be interested in selling for the right price. It's a 17.5" frame new fox and new XT drive train. You can contact me via e-mail or phone at (610)453-1207.
