for more than 20 hours per day. I have been thinking about this a lot and I don't know what to do. I feel terrible for the dog. It is showing signs of shelter shock. It's emotional and physical needs are being neglected. It is fed regularly and has water available and it's cage is clean but this situation seems so cruel to me. What would you do?

If the dog is taken away, it will go to a shelter. There it will spend 24 hours a day in a cage and experience even more stress.

It is cruel! How would you like to be restricted to this tiny locked cage for an extended period of time? My goodness.... I bet the poor thing is going into some kind of shock. It'll never get over it.... Please intervene on it's behalf. Call your local animal control office and report it. Save the poor thing's life.... THAT is what I'd do.... friend or not friend. He's not a hamster for goodness sake!

Talk to the sister-in-law. I'd get some articles about crate training and how it's good when done in moderation (8 hours a day), perhaps. If talking to her kindly doesn't work, I'd let her know that the next step is to call animal control. Yes, the dog would be put in a cage for 23 or 24 hours a day, but it might go to a home where it'll never be crated again. Your sister-in-law needs to realize that a dog is for always, not just for when it's convenient. If things can change by your talking to her, great. If not, it's time to give this dog another chance.

You must rescue it somehow - being kept in a cage for that long IS cruelty to animals.

The dog can't rescue itself, so it needs you.

Is the cage in the back yard or garden? If it is visible to the neighbors at any time you can have the chance to make an anonymous call to animal welfare and your sister-in-law won't know who it was - she would probably think it was one of the neighbors.

Otherwise, if it is indoors, this is a little more difficult but not impossible...

Maybe drop into your sister-in-laws place with a 'friend' who you know will be outraged at seeing the caged dog and take action to save the dog, or who would be willing to be blamed for you making the call to animal welfare.

If all else fails - it is up to you. Just call animal welfare. Families eventually forgive each other, but that dog is suffering.

Wouldn't you want someone to rescue You from that situation?

I would talk to her about it. If she continues this neglect than contact the SPCA to come inspect, or give a time limit for her to fix the problem before they just seize the dog. If she is heart broken, who cares, she never even loved the dog anyways. she was too lazy to soclaize and exercise the dog. Why do people own dogs if they just let them sit there crammed in a cage all day. why waste the money?

EDIT: hmm maybe when the SPCA arrives ask them if there are any animal welfare groups that they would send the dog to. He could be sent to a foster home.

In a shelter,it would most likely be kept in a kennel, and walked everyday.Right now it is being tortured.I knew someone once who did that with a cocker spaniel. The dog went crazy, and one day, when they did let it out,it attacked their little boy for no reason,so they shot it.Of course it was their fault, and they admitted it,and the next dog they got was never kept in a cage. So,the dog would be much better off in a shelter where it can be socialized and adopted before it goes crazy and can't be trusted.

What an awful person she must be. Talk to her, talk to your brother, tell them that a dog can't be in a crate for 20 hours a day and you're worried about the poor thing. Suggest rehoming the dog or taking it to the shelter. I'd create such a huge uproar someone would listen to me. People do such awful things to their dogs it's mind boggling. Good luck.

We used a crate for training - and at first I thought they were horrible. Our dog really responded to his crate, and it became his "home" and no one could violate it. That wasn't good either. His crate was the largest available 4 foot by 4 foot and he slept in it at night in the room with us. It was just his place. But he got over protective of it, and we had to do away with it. He has since learned to sleep at our feet on a blanket, so our problem solved itself. 20 hours a day in a crate almost sounds like someone who just doesn't have time for a dog. Maybe you should try to help her find a more suitable home for the dog. If you can't love and play with them, why keep them? Just my thoughts.

If you report it and the dog is taken away maybe they will find it a better home in the shelter where it will get to run free and play with children.
