Currently there are two new standards in DVD. One is called HD-DVD (mainly supported by Microsoft and Toshiba) and Blu-Ray (supported by Sony and Panasonic as well as many other corporations). Both of these two standard offer High Definition resolution (six times sharper than a regular standard dvd disc). Both standards are not compatible with each other and offer their own DVD players. One is called HD-DVD player and the other is called Blu-Ray DVD Player. Prices start out for HD-DVD players $199.00 while Blu-Ray DVD players cost around $500.00.

If you have a Playstation 3 video game console then the blue ray drive is built into the console and so you can watch Blu-ray DVDs from the Playstation 3.

If you bought Die Hard 4.0 Live Free or Die Harder on high definition than Blu-Ray has the movie rights to be released on their format. The movie will only play on a Blu-Ray DVD player and won't work with your standard DVD player.
