No, Sony saves money. Each EE chip costs Sony 27$ (without installation). People were complaining about the price - that's why they had removed it.

No, the Emotion Engine didn't cause any problems because my 60GB PS3 has the Emotion Engine and it's just fine. Sony removed the Emotion Engine chip too reduce production costs.
If the 80GB PS3 was to have the Emotion Engine chip in it right now, it would probably be selling $50-$100 dollars more than it is right now. So many people were complaining about the high price of the PS3, they removed the Emotion engine chip to make it more afforadable

It was Sony's way to save money. The 60 gb was selling at 600 bucks, so an 80 gb version would costs around 700 bucks (if you include Motorstorm). You can see why Sony had to drop the price down because the PS3 wasn't selling that well at 600 bucks, so it would sell even worse at 700 bucks.
The cost to get and make the Blu-ray diode dropped in price, so Sony was able to drop the 60 gb down to 500 bucks, but Sony was still losing money. So take away the emotion engine, and Sony loses a little less money.

Yes, the chip had been modified by the ps3's evil 'twin brother' so that the only emotion it could feel was anger. It caused all sorts of problems with the other game consoles.
I keed. Couldn't resist the chance for a played-out Sony-themed Star Trek joke :-D
If you mean the motion chip/sensor for the controller - Sony probably removed the motion chip because they rushed its addition and it may not have worked properly. If you mean the engine - cost may have been a factor. No reason doing something with a chip if you can do it with software.
