I wenht to the police to report my passport lost but they would not help me. I called the American embassy in Guangzhou but they said it would be amoth before they can help me and my visa expires in 5 days. I don't know what to do. If I overstay my visa it is 1 month in Jail for every day I overstay my visa.

You cannot be placed behind bars because you have a valid reason - a lost passport which you already reported. Seek aid from the embassy of your country in China so that you will be protected,

That sucks! It sounds like they are doing something wrong- they should be giving you a new passport far more quickly I think. You may have seen this already but here is some State Dept info.

Maybe try to have someone in the States call the Overseas Citizens Service. It says on their site that can help get the paperwork/ ID verification done more quickly, and also sometimes having more than one person harassing the bureaucrats can help speed stuff up.

You might have misunderstood. I seriously doubt that the US consulate (not embassy) in Guangzhou will make you wait for a month to apply for a replacement passport. They have very clear instructions as to how to replace your passport.

If the PSB refuses to take your report, you need to think about whether or not you REALLY lost your passport.
