If I buy the pc version of ffxi can I install it onto the the ps3 and play the game? If so how?

nope, you need ps2 version. i believe after you install it theres some sort of download you need to do from the sony website.

No. Even if you'll install Linux and then XP on it you won't be able to play it - PS3 doesn't support DirectX.
