not sure where you are or what your situation or resources are but here are a couple of blind stabs in the dark.
If you are in a college town with students from NC you might be able to post on the bulletin board that you are financially tapped and need a ride home for the holidays. Or post on the supermarket boards (Bingo halls are a good one for this idea too) that you are willing to help put up holiday lights and decorations. thats always good for a little under the radar cash. (hint: quote a fair price to an elderly client and the grapevine will get you all the work you can handle.)

Collect some junk laying around the house/apt and have a garage sale or sell it on craigslist. There was a guy through trading on craigs list turned a paper clip into a house, so I am sure you can manage some bus fare.
