The Catholic Church is against the death penalty except in rare cases.

Some church's view? I don't care.

Society's view? There are many views within each society.

My view? It's primitive and barbaric. Basically, it's the idea that the "state" is above individuals, so it's okay for them to do what it's not okay for us to do. It's tantamount to the people being the property of the state.

I do not want killing to be done in my name. I do not want our employees to have the power of life and death over us.

To kill in self-defense is one thing. But, to kill someone who is a prisoner, and is no longer a threat, is simply a show of power.

Of course, if someone I loved was murdered, I'd want to kill that person with my bare hands, if that was possible. But, this is supposed to be why we have government -- to protect us from each other, regardless of circumstances.

I want to live in a civilized world.

My personal view is God said, "an eye for an eye", and I haven't seen anything scripturally that takes this away.
