What is an example of a good letter inquiring about a volunteer position with a company? What types of things should I include? I am thinking about volunteering at a nursing home, animal shelter, or crisis pregnancy center.

Well, I have been volunteering for 22 years now and have never needed a volunteer letter, as orgs are grateful for any help they receive. If you are required to give one, I would simply make it resume-ish, listing your skills, work history, and references....as a letter, you don't list of course but include it all in a 2 paragraph summary of why you feel you are qualified to do said job......good luck!

I personally never needed a letter before, I have found that the quickest way to get involved is to go find out who is in charge of the volunteers and sit down and talk with them. Tell them about yourself and what you would like to do and then they will know if they have anything that will interest you. I know from experience that alot of times volunteers show up for awhile but when the new wears off they are gone or they just want to wonder around and do there own thing. Either way the help nobody and usually mess something else up. So I recommend going and seeing whom ever it is you are going to be working for and sit down and have a talk, if they want some paperwork you can get it then anyway, Good luck and God Bless!!!

Write your letter with the intention of attaching a resume to such. Your resume should include not only your professional experience and academic qualifications, but also your volunteering experience to date (if any).

In your letter, state why the organization to which you are writing, and its mission, are of particular interest to you. Also, state what skills you are offering (web design, translation, envelope stuffing, training, etc.), what days of the week you are available, what time of day you are available, and how many hours a week/month you are available.

Your letter doesn't have to be a separate document -- it can be your introduction email.

Volunteering is a privilege, not a right. Be ready to knock on a lot of doors, make a lot of phone calls and visit onsite to more than one place.
