First of all can someone explain the team concept of Nextel Cup racing.
I understand that there are owners and teams such as Hendrick Motor Sports. I also understand that Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson are teammates. I would imagine that they have other teammates.
What I am having trouble understanding is how there can be teams when it is an individual sport and there is a season points champion. Doesn't this ever cause conflict?
Also, considering that Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon finished at 1 & 2 in points and are at the top, are there any other famous teammates in the past of note?
Mostly though, I just have trouble understanding the point of a team in an individual sport.

Thanks so far although some answers were condescending. I was asking a legitimate question and anyone who answers in a condescending manner is nothing more than a D-Bag, but I should not have expected any thing less.
Perhaps I termed it incorrectly by saying 'individual sport', but I really did not think that that would cause so many of you to get your panties in a bunch.
I understand that Hendrick among other TEAMS are an organization with a main owner, and that they share information and help eachother during the race by drafting, blocking opponents, etc.
What I meant is, now that Jimmie Jonson WON the Nextel Cup and the points title, I saw him raising a trophy and being interviewed as the 2 time defending CHAMPION. I also saw an interview with Jeff Gordon sending congratualtions to Jimmie, but also saying that he too would have liked to win the points title.
When I watch the Yankees win the WS in a TEAM sport the entire team wins not just the MVP.
Please explain this to me

I was confused about this too at first. I follow RCR, so let me use them as an example. They drive the 29 (Harvick), 31 (J. Burton) and the 07 (Bowyer). Individual teams (ie: 29 team) always race to win...no matter what. They will race the pants off their teammates if it means a win. They might just race them a little cleaner. (Jeff and Jimmie did this a few times this year) However, when it comes to setup and strategy, they will share info. Also, think about the owner...he wants ALL of his teams to do well. There are driver standings (points) and also Owners points too. Higher points, more money etc. I do think there is an individual part of the sport. I mean...only one person is driving, making the decisions on the track, behind the wheel. Pit crew and spotters and engine builders put the best thing they can on the track, but ultimately, if you don't have a driver...you won't win.

Sorry to ramble, hope I helped.

The organization is Hendrick Motor Sports. The teams are the #24 and the #48. They also have the #25 and #5.

The teams consist of the driver, the crew chief and crew. The team concept is to recognize the importance of the people who build, maintain and service the race car during a race. It isn't an individual sport, no driver could win by her/himself.

The teams compete against all other teams including other Hendrick teams. Hendrick teams exchange information and help each other in any way they can. The point is to get all the organizations teams going well and highly positioned in the chase. In the end each team does it's best to win races and the championship.

I think you have confused yourself more than anything. Nascar is NOT an individual sport. Sure, there is only one driver per car. But who do you think builds the cars? Who do you think pits the cars during the races? Who builds the motors, chassis, hangs the body? It takes a whole TEAM of 50 - 90 people to put a one race car on the track. Hendrick Motorsports has over 500 people that work together to put 4 race cars on the track. I hardly call that an individual sport. The team with the best car, driver, pit stops, etc. are the teams that succeed in racing. Golf and tennis are individual sports. Nascar is far from an individual sport.

I don't think anybody ever referred to NASCAR, or any form of auto racing as an individual sport. It takes a team to get the car to the track, on the track, and to keep it there. Gymnastic and Diving are individual sports, and even they have teams.

Because in racing everyone can perform in unison and revel in the outcome. The outcome of a win by only one victor makes racing one of the purest types of competion, shown by the fact that men don't physically touch eachother. Motorsports rule!
