The active ingredient of Unisom which is Doxylamine is a potent ANTICHOLINERGIC. Its anticholinergic actions can reduce the effects mediated by ACETYLCHOLINE in the central nervous system.

One of the effects mediated by acetylcholine is the modulation of heart functions. Because the modulatory efforts of acetylcholine is decreased or partly counteracted by the anticholinergic actions of Doxylamine (Unisom), one of the side effects is speeding of the heart beats called tachycardia - that is the cause of the pounding of the heart.
