It doesn't. One of the popes supposedly got a 'word from God' that Mary was a prostitute, because there was some evidence that Jesus was very fond of her (like a girlfriend) and they didn't want THAT rumor spreading, so they turned her into a prostitute to turn folks off to that possibility. Actually, Mary was most probably a very well respected woman of her culture at the time.
(That's why we shouldn't listen to men who get extra-biblical 'words from God'. There's no evidence and no way to prove what they are saying is true. That's how people get led astray.)

No where does it say she was a prostitute. it is one of those "implied" teachings from the contexts of the passages where she is mentioned. There are extra-biblical references to this rumor also. in Luke 7:39 it just says manner of woman yet does not say Mary. Luke 8:2 says Out of whom many spirits were cast out and that she had been healed of many infirmities.
NO WHERE does it actually say she was a prostitute.
God Bless

Dawn C hit the nail right on the head. Having Mary M as a friend of Jesus did not fit into their plans, so they made her out to be a whore. She was in reality a very educated person who even had her own writings. Check out some of the books that never made (chosen for) the Bible. You will find one with her name on it.

It doesn't. Wrong Mary. There are a few. Pope Gregory brought that about in a notorious sermon. Catholics have actually got it out worse for her than Protestants. Check out the source link.

It doesn't. She was never rumored to be a prostitute in the Orthodox, Monophysite or Nestorian traditions. The whole thing is a late myth.

It does not. She simply committed adultery, which means she could have been seen talking to a guy who wasn't her husband or relative. She was also from Magdalena, which was well known for its prostitutes.

It doesn't. The New Testament mentions several different Marys and several unnamed "women of the city".
Somehow they have become confused in people's minds.

Absolutely nowhere. And there is nothing in scripture that even hints that she was other than a godly woman.
