On Wed. I took my son & I to the doctor because I had a sore throat (quite bad) & he'd had a fever the night before & in the morning. They took swabs of my son & my throat & it turned out negative for an infection. Anyways, the fever went away but my son has been sick since..not eating etc. On Sat. we took my 2 year old son to emergency b/c he had swollen gums with white spots on them & white spot on his tongue. His mouth looked infected. He was diagnosed with herpangina (common virus among children, foot & mouth one I believe). I was also diagnosed with it (I had a white spot on my tonsil area but it was mild). Anyways, today my son's mouth seemed to not have improved so we took him to a walk-in-clinic to get a second opinion. The doctor wasn't sure if he's got an infection or a virus in his mouth so he prescribed an antibiotic. I want to start giving it to him tommorrow morning but I'm wondering if it's safe if he doesn't have an infection & it's a virus. HELP!!!

No, the 2nd doctor didn't take a swab.

If neither doctor did a swab, you don't know for sure if its viral. If its viral, the antibiotic won't help. Giving the antibiotic won't hurt him. Make sure you give him the whole prescription once you start though.

If it's a virous the antibiotic wont help. foot and mouth is a cattle desease ( I think) that is transmited to people and not so extremly common , yet not extremly uncommon either.
Did the second Dr. take a swab?
Try Googling herpangina

I don't know the answer to this, but I recommend that you disregard anything anyone says in reply to this question on Y!A. This is a site full of random people who actually have an incentive to answer, whether correctly or otherwise. Medical questions have no place here.
