i think its as common among adults, it just go undiagnosed where as with schoolage children there are teachers, school couselor and psychologist that are watching the behaviors of children all day. i can count about 5 adults i know right off the top of my head that are bipolar, but its not diagnosed.

There are two questions that any honest psychologist cannot answer "yes" to: 1) Have you ever cured anyone? and 2) Is there a definitive physical test that positively identifies any form of "mental illness"? Psychology is basically the categorization and description of aberrant behavior. This behavior is only described as an "illness" to get someone, the government or health insurance, to pay for it.

Bipolar is NOT more common in children than in adults. There are child psychologists who are promoting the concept of juvenile bipolar disorder and the recommendation that children "diagnosed" as bipolar be given certain drugs to treat it. These drugs, especially in children, have side effects that also affect behavior so more drugs to counteract these symptoms are prescribed.

And this is done for children whose brains are still developing!

Diagnosis of child bipolar disorder is seen by many as a "fad". Psychiatrists who make these diagnoses often have intimate ties with pharmaceutical companies who make the drugs recommended as treatment by these same psychiatrists. See link.

As a person who dealt with depression for over 40 years and who has a brother who's a psychologist and who's spent many a family meal discussing psychology I wonder where you get that information?? Two of my daughter's were diagnosed as children with depression and no one said that bi-polar is more common in children than adults. I will ask my daughter's psychologist and psychiatrist and see what they think. They both deal with children and adolescents so they would know. I will let you know what they say.

I think bi-polar is being so over diagnosed theses days...it seems like a label they stick on everyone who has good days and bad days (human). I would not let them label my child with a psych diagnosis, because people tend to label them based on this. The world is an unhappy place at times...and I truly believe that medicating everyone is not the answer......you rarely heard of bi-polar in the 70's , 80's and 90's.......it keeps the psych doctors and med companies rich.

Bipolar is a lifelong illness. It's just easier to get a child to the Dr. to be diagnosed than it is to get an adult to seek treatment.

Considering children do become adults then really it is more common in adults as it is a life long uncurable though treatable illness.
I do not think you become bi-polar you are bi-polar

That is not true. It is just being discovered so easily now by Dr's that more people are being diagnosed with it. Duh, they will all be adults one day!
