Is there a passage anywhere in the bible that somehow has a "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink" message with regard to faith. As in, no one can make you believe and you have to do it on your own in order to get into heaven.

I am not sure off the top of my head, but I do know the only way to have faith is through your own want to believe. No one can have faith for you. You have to come to that on your own. Luckily praying for others does seem to put them in faith changing situations.

Our God is an awesome God. Have even the faith of a mustard seed and he will sustain you. God pulled me through every bad time and scary situation I have ever been in when I called on him with an ounce of faith and he will do the same for you. There is no problem to big or too small to call on him for and he can and will hear you and pull you through it. Sometimes not instantly and when it hasn't been instantly in my life I realized when it was done that he did even more awsome works than I even knew I needed either by fixing it far better than I would have ever imagined or by giving me time to learn something that I needed to learn. The lessons God teaches us when he is answering our prayers are just as important as the solutions he gives us. I hope this is at least somewhat what you were looking for and I pray that you turn to God and ask him for answers he will listen. He is not going to be mad or punish you if you pour your heart out and tell him that you need faith or that your confused. He will reward you with answers because you at least had enough faith to come to him with it.

There is no reference in the bible about the horse comment. The bible says that every man is given a measure of faith. To get to heaven you must use that faith, believe in Jesus and accept His sacrifice for your sins. It is in fact your choice. It is required of you to believe and act on that belief. Once saved, you will develope a very intimate and personal relationship with God. There is nothing like it on this earth. God cannot fail and will not leave you.

If you could find the faith in yourself to believe with all your heart what the BIBLE teaches concerning your eternal destiny without CHRIST there would be no need of the HOLY SPIRIT to convince you of the truth.

You are 100% correct in saying that no human being can make you believe. However, when the HOLY SPIRIT speaks to you through a true born again christian, through the BIBLE, or HIS WORD through a tract, newspaper or other media when under the anointing of the HOLY SPIRIT, then you will truly understand how empty your question is and you will know the truth.

GOD says when you seek me with all of your heart you will find me. However you can't seek HIM with all of your heart without the work of the HOLY SPIRIT. It isn't in you!

May GOD in HIS infinite mercy reach out to you and snatch you from an eternal destiny you never want to see.

Several good answers here already, but one place that isn't mentioned is in Revelation where Jesus says "I stand at the door and knock".

When you tie this with the other good quotes above, you can see that the choice is there to accept or refuse. Now, to answer your question about faith - yes, it is a gift from God as indicated above.

You can refuse the gift of faith as you can refuse the gift of forgiveness ... although why anyone would is beyond my understanding.

Those who love and seek God's truth receve a gift from God called faith and through faith revelation and through revelation a personal relationship with God.

Ephe:2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

No, in fact in Romans 12:3 it teaches that God gives us all a measure of faith.

It is up to us to stretch and strengthen it by using it.

No, you can not work up genuine faith to believe in God. It is a gift from God. God must open your heart to believe just like He must grant you repentance or it is not genuine. Ask God to enable you to believe, ask Him for the faith to believe Him.

The parable of lazarus

(Luke 16:27-17:3) . . .Then he said, ‘In that event I ask you, father, to send him to the house of my father, 28 for I have five brothers, in order that he may give them a thorough witness, that they also should not get into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to these.’ 30 Then he said, ‘No, indeed, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them they will repent.’ 31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’” 17 Then he said to his disciples: “It is unavoidable that causes for stumbling should come. Nevertheless, woe to the one through whom they come! 2 It would be of more advantage to him if a millstone were suspended from his neck and he were thrown into the sea than for him to stumble one of these little ones. 3 Pay attention to yourselves. If your brother commits a sin give him a rebuke, and if he repents forgive him.
