2 reasons:
1) there isn't much else to do.
2) prison is a very dog-eat-dog environment. Getting big and muscular is one way to be intimidating and thereby be left alone. Also, the stronger you are, the better off you fare in an inevitable fight.

I used to work as a deputy in law enforcement, occasionally spending time inside the jail as well. There are two reasons mainly. One, because the "culture" in jails and prisons dictates that one must be tough to survive. Outside of fighting (which of course does happen) the only way to "prove" oneself is by showing off how strong one is on the weights...and will also help if one ever does get in a fight. Second...they have nothing better to do!

1. Nothing to do.
2. Bigger you are the better
3. Nothing to do
4. grudges against the police/ corrections.

We have a poster in the weight room with a bunch of inmates on it at the station that says: "these guys worked out today, did you?" Even though it should be in the break room not the gym lol

Maybe because there is nothing to do. Also maybe some realized that this is not the life they want and learned their lesson and want to change outside and inside and be a new person when they get out get a reagular job, pay taxes and change their life around. Maybe it7s part of them waking up and getting their life on track.

well its not the exact same scenario, but i can relate. I was in afghanistan for a year and couldnt really go anywhere, i worked out a lot because when you have that much time on your hands, working out gives you something to look forward too, it kills time, and it makes you feel good.

IT IS A BELIEF THAT MUSCLE MEANS STRENGTH. I HAVE SEEN INMATES WEIGHT LIFT 500 LBS, YET COULD NOT LIFT A PERSON OFF THE GROUND.

BECAUSE THEY ARE BIG MEANS OR = TO INTIMIDATION OF LEAVE ME ALONE. PSYCHOLOGICAL INTIMIDATION FACTOR.

NOW IF THEY GRAB YOU AND BEAR HUG YOU, YOU JUST POP THEM WITH YOUR HANDS AT BOTH EAR DRUMS AND THEY WILL BE STUNNED FOR 30-40 SEC.

It relieves stress...of which there is plenty inside a prison.

Kills time.

Makes one physically stronger...a plus for anyone in the prison system.
