I just started a job in retail yesterday morning - as a freight worker. When I signed up for this job I did not know I would have to work at 6 in the morning (wake up at 4:30, leave at 5:10 - I live a ways away), not until they had written up a schedule. Not only are the hours bad, and it's only minimum wage, but the work itself explains why they need help . I've been making myself sick trying to adjust to this, I already knew I hated the job the first day, and knew I was going to quit very soon, but I want to quit tomorrow - which I am scheduled to work. Would it look bad if I didn't drag my butt up there at 5:45 in the morning just to say I quit and instead called to say Id like to resign?

I must add -- they didn't spend time ANY training me or anything! So it's not like I wasted anyone else's time but mine.

I had a similar situation and I did quit. I called in and left a message. I've never regretted it. It was in a factory where I had to be there at 6 and I also lived a ways away. Plus, the first day I was there, they announced mandatory overtime and then I was going to have to be there at 5:30am! I thought NO WAY! If you're only making minimum wage anyway, I wouldn't think twice about quitting. You can work at McDonald's probably for more than minimum wage. I wouldn't worry about looking bad.

Whether you go in or call, just tell them it's not what you expected, and you're sorry for the inconvenience. I would, however, go in to quit, especially if they've given you any shirts or name tags, etc. Also, I'd give them the courtesy of at least another half day's work (but quit when you walk in).

You've only been there for one day, so you're going to look bad regardless of whether you go into work and quit or call to resign. Don't plan on asking these folks to be a reference.

you probably should give two weeks notice so you can tell your next employer you gave notice
