kclightm is right. When the bible was written 200 years after Christ's death, it was done to pull everyone under one religion which was the up and coming Christianity. The Council of Nicaea knew paganism would be a threat to the new religion so they added in the bible things that put down paganism and invented a devil and hell saying that these people were evil because they worshiped the devil. Then they started to convert the pagans to Christianity to "save them" those who refused were put to death. Also the early Church knew that the more people under them would mean more money to line their pockets!

When Christianity was trying to win over the masses that Paganism, a plan of attack (so to speak) was to make the Pagan religion look to be a "lesser" religion than Christianity, to make them think that they were being misled by practicing paganism and turn to Christianity as the "truth"

In the Burning Times, Christianity had to REALLY make Paganism look bad to further justify their burning and killing of thousands of "witches" as another way to snuff out the Pagan religions and get everyone to convert to Christianity.

What do you mean by pagan themes?

Bear in mind some of the semitic cults had some "charming" customs like prostuition which may or may not have been voluntary!

Competition. The pagan stories are enthralling, but paganism was the biggest religion competing for the faith of the people of the time.
