My Jack Russell Terrier has recently began to itch badly. I use on a monthly basis one of the top products available, also, recommended by my veteranarian, to kill fleas and ticks. However, I have gotten off of him a few fleas, and ticks, two including two deeply embedded in the past week. I know the product (suppose to) kill them within so many hours, but would like to find a way to repel them from getting on him in the first place. I know feeding a little piece of garlic in food has been one option around for years, but would like to ask if anyone has any other ideas. I know through the years I've heard of some other ideas, but can't recall them. I have had no problem since I got him a year and a half ago, until now. Help! He's scratching so bad. Have also, bathed him in anti-itch shampoo. Am guessing, he might also be allergic to fleas since it's so bad, and have found so few actually on him. Am, also planning on treating my yard next week, and am aware to keep him off of it.

Am adding this- the product I have been using is Frontline Plus and has been great up till this point. The ideas already offered, so far, have all been very helpful. Like the one answer, I'm looking for more of a repellent, to keep the fleas and ticks off before biting. Brewers yeast and Borax are the two things I couldn't remember, that I used in the past.

I'm definitely going to try the homemade solution with the lemon, water & lavender oil. I would much rather go without chemicals on him

I have found a great product, called Flea Treats. They keep fleas and ticks off BEFORE they bite, and supposedly repel mosquitos too. And the pets love them! Do NOT feed your pet garlic, as it can cause anemia. I feed my pet these everyday. fleatreats.com

Just so you know, if you wash the dog in ANYTHING you need to wait 48 hours before applying the Frontline, or the Frontline can't work. You also need to wait 48 hours after bathing before you can apply it.

I wouldn't recommend garlic, brewer's yeast, borax, salt, or any of the old 'remedies'. If they actually worked Frontline wouldn't need to have been developed in the first place.

I would think you need to treat your house with something proper, i.e not Borax but a proper spray from the vets. The likelihood is that there's an infestation in the house that has crept up on you - Frontline Plus only kills the eggs, adults and larvae that are on the animal. Plus you need to use it every 2 weeks for it to be an effective tick repellant.

Brewer's yeast
Essential oils

I make a homemade insect repellent with a lemon, 1 quart of water, and lavender essential oil.

Cut lemon into thin slices. Boil 1 quart of water and pour water over lemon slices. Let it steep. Add a few drops of lavender. Keep in refrigerator.

I keep it in a spray bottle and I spray it on her everyday.

Also, diatomaceous earth. DE isn't a flea repellent, but a flea killer, rather. I don't like using topicals because they're nothing but poison. DE is a great, natural way to kill fleas and other insects.

Frontline/Advantage/K9 Advantix/etc will NOT repel fleas. It only kills fleas AFTER they've already bitten your dog.

you are on the right track treating the environment as well as the dog! Good for you! Ok...next on the agenda is to purchase a topical that will prevent as well as repels both fleas and ticks. Get some frontline. If your dog is allergic to the fleas you will need to bathe him in an oatmeal shampoo to soothe this itch....MAKE SURE it is detergent free...if it is not...you will wash off the topical treatment. You can purchase the detergent free shampoo from Pet-agree.com they carry a full line of detergent free products that will work marvelously!!!! You wont have to wait two days after a bath to put on your treatment...and you wont have to worry about washing it away!!!! Good luck!

If you want to really find out how the frontline works...go to their website...they have a full article that explains it all for you!.

You might want to fleabomb the house.

Fleas can live in the environment, so the frontline might work at killing fleas when the bite, but he can keep getting fleas from the house.

Brewer's yeast, flea/tick collar/D.E./Borax regular grooming and nematodes in the yard. Nematodes won't get rid of ticks but they'll knock the fleas out of the picture.

I have a friend who swears by brewer's yeast pills. The dog weighed about 40 lbs and she would give him 2 or 3 about 3 times a week. I don't recall seeing the dog itch, dig, or chew himself that much

Get Frontline from your vet. DO NOT buy it over the internet or from one of those companies you can call that you see commercials for all the time. I've used Frontline on all dogs I have had and so has my family - we are a big dog family.

You can use a Capstar pill everyday until they are all dead. Now do you also treat your house. I also know about cedar chips in the bedding of the dog. Put under the mattress.
