We are attempting to create a family tree for our children and so on and would like to know how to get started with the search for my husbands past. His grandparents have passed and his other relatives are of little help. We would just like to know where to look and how to find out the correct spelling and how to find out when and where his family arrived in the US.

The most accurate old records may be church baptisms.
If you know the towns & dates, contact the diocese there.

try some genealogy sites, often you will find relatives you have with original name spellings. Ive met hundreds of cousins online Ive never met in person. genforum is one that has a forum where you can ask questions.
genforum.com
just type your surname in the surname box and you can go there to ask.
