Should I get a Saint Bernard or a Doberman?

St Bernards are larger, they require Less exercise, more food, and they can be droolers ! If you don't mind slober, then that is the way to go. Personally, I love Dobes. Mine is a great family dog, loves kids and babies, but he is very high energy.Even at 5 yrs old, He gets a hike or run at the river trail EVERY day.He also loves training and accompanying his people. They are NOT outdoor dogs to be banished outside, they need to be part of the family pack. But at home, he is loyal and is protective in an intelligent way. He can discern a false threat from real one. I also like the short fur, little grooming except for a bath every 2-3 weeks. But also both are purebred, so they will have genetically inherited diseases of course, but proper health, care and food will lengthen the life of any dog.

Definitly a saint bernard. I have a 1 1/2 year old male and he is the most obedient, kindest, gentlest and BIGGEST dog ever. Everyone loves him. He is so friendly and was very easy to train. And saint bernard's are 10 times cuter than dobermans anyway. If you want a big, fluffly, cuddly, lazy dog then get a Saint!

They are such different dogs... there is no way to know which is appropriate for you without more information. Because you are asking it, it leads me to believe you don't have a lot of experience with any of the breeds. For that reason, I would suggest a German Shepard. Saint Bernards have special requirements due to their size, and they also have relatively short life spans. Digestive issues like bloat are common. Dobies are nice dogs, but they can have skin issues and they take a really knowledgeable and confident, consistent trainer. Leonbergers are a fairly rare breed, but their coat maintenance is a thought, as well as other issues related to their health. Also, extremely expensive. Therefore I would go with a German Shepard from a kennel that does hip guarantees (which means likely German stock) and temperament guarantees. You will be spending close to a thousand dollars for a pup with clear hips, eyes, and a temperament guarantee. But overall, based on your limited information given, the GSD is the best of the lot for a typical household.

That is quite a difference in breeds. Have you researched anything on either one?

What's your life style? How much energy do you want? How much time do you have? Where do you live? Do you have a yard? Where can you exercise a dog that large? Are you prepared finantially? Where can you take classes?

Dobies are big and poerful dogs and need a strong person to lead them. They require a lot of training and I would not suggest on for the first time pet owner.

Saint Bernards are very large drooley, hairy dogs. They require attention and training like any other dog.

Both can have health problems and large breed dogs generally have a shorter life span. I would really consider your life style and really research to make sure it is the dog for you. You can check with breed clucs, rescues and shelters for more information.

St Bernard.. If you haven't researched each breed enough that you know which one you want.. I would prefer that you went for the St Bernard.. Far too many people buy a dog that they aren't prepared for .. don't have the experience for, don't have the time and energy for.. and I would rather if you are going to get a dog without researching first.. that you go for the St Bernard..

Wow that is quit the contrast other than them being larger breeds. One is going to require a fair amount of grooming and not tons of energy ( Saints) the other doesn't require lots of grooming and is higher energy. I have 2 Dobes but I can't tell you that they would be best for you and your life style. Both are very nice dogs I wouldn't want the drewl of the Saints although I hear there are a "dry"mouth but don't know much about them. They both can have hip problems. How much time do have to devote to grooming, exercising. How big is your living quarters they both do nice in small quarters but how much space are you willing to give up?

Doberman. I think they are a very noble dog, but also do give off a good scare for people who know nothing about the breed. Beautiful animal. Why these two though?

I prefer Dobermans because they are a short haired breed and are very loyal and easy going. They are a smart breed and can be very intimidating in appearance, however I have never seen either of ours be aggressive towards any person...

We just had a litter of 9 puppies and they are wonderful!

Ask yourself what you really want in a dog, how much time you can devote to exercise, how much room you have, and so forth. Then look for the breed that best suits your needs. Those are two very different breeds, with different needs and requirements.
